UE/R: 80 suspects arrested in police swoop

The Upper East Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, has arrested 80 people during a special anti-crime operation carried out in parts of the Upper East Region.

The operation took place between May 25 and June 3, 2026, and targeted areas known for their involvement in criminal activities, including Zuarungu, Bolgatanga, Tongo, Bongo, and the Nabdam District.

According to the police, 12 suspects were arrested in Zuarungu. They included eight men and four women. Among the women were three Nigerians and one Ghanaian.

In Bongo, police arrested 34 suspects, comprising 32 men and 2 women. Another 14 suspects, including 12 men and two women, were arrested in Pelungu, Kongo, and Nangodi in the Nabdam District.

Police also arrested 20 suspects in Bolgatanga, bringing the total number of arrests across the region to 80.

Initial investigations suggest that many of the suspects were involved in drug-related activities, including the sale and use of illegal substances, as well as other crimes.

During the operation in Tongo, police recovered a motorcycle, foreign-made cigarettes, male condoms, and substances believed to be Indian hemp.

In Bongo, officers also found three rounds of 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition and two motorcycles.

In the Nabdam District, police seized sacks and parcels containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, drinks believed to contain narcotic substances, an unregistered motorcycle, foreign cigarettes, and parts of a casino jackpot machine.

In Bolgatanga, officers recovered more dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, assorted cigarettes, two registered motorcycles, an unregistered motorcycle, and a casino jackpot machine.

The police said all 80 suspects are currently in custody and will be taken to court to face prosecution after investigations are completed.
