Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially been elected as the Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The 46-year-old leader has taken on this role following a decision made by regional leaders, positioning him at the forefront of the West African bloc’s highest decision-making body.
Faye was appointed as the new leader of the regional bloc during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority, which took place in Sierra Leone.
He succeeds Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who held the position since June 2025 after the conclusion of President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as chairman.
In his new capacity, President Faye will provide leadership and guidance on significant regional matters, including economic integration, peace and security, democratic governance, and collaboration among ECOWAS member states.
His election occurs at a pivotal moment for the regional organization, which has encountered challenges such as political instability in certain member states, security threats, and initiatives to enhance unity among West African nations.
President Faye, who became Senegal’s youngest president after winning the 2024 presidential election, has gained recognition for his reform agenda and advocacy for increased sovereignty and cooperation among African countries.
His assumption of the ECOWAS chairmanship places him at the heart of efforts to steer the future direction of the 15-member regional bloc.
In another significant appointment, General Birame Diop, Senegal’s former Minister of Defence and former Chief of the General Staff of the Senegalese Armed Forces, has been designated as President of the ECOWAS Commission.
General Diop, who has also served as an adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General, is anticipated to assume leadership of the ECOWAS Commission on September 1, 2026, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
