The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured candidates and parents dissatisfied with the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results that they can apply for a remarking of their examination scripts through an official process.
WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, said candidates who believe their results do not reflect their performance have the right to request a review.
“Anybody who is not satisfied with their results has the opportunity to ask for remarking,” he said.
Mr Kapi explained that candidates cannot apply directly to WAEC. Instead, they must submit their request through their schools, which will forward the application to WAEC through the District Examinations Officer.
He said WAEC will retrieve the scripts and assign the relevant Chief Examiner to conduct a fresh review.
The Council noted that applicants are required to pay a fee to cover the cost of the remarking process, although the amount varies depending on the request.
According to Mr Kapi, the review is usually completed within a few weeks, depending on how quickly the application is submitted.
He disclosed that while some candidates have had their grades adjusted after remarking, such cases are uncommon, and in most instances any change in marks does not affect the final grade.
Mr Kapi also cautioned that remarking does not always lead to higher scores, revealing that some candidates have received lower marks after their scripts were reviewed.
To ensure transparency, he said WAEC allows candidates, parents or guardians to inspect the reviewed scripts where necessary to verify the outcome.
