South African police have arrested a 52-year-old national after he allegedly arrived at OR Tambo International Airport from Accra with substances suspected to be heroin valued at more than GH¢1.4 million.
The arrest took place on Sunday, September 20, during an intelligence-led operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Border Management Authority.
Police said a search of the suspect’s luggage uncovered bullet-like objects and blocks containing the suspected narcotics.
The drugs are estimated to have a street value of more than R2 million, equivalent to over GH¢1.4 million or about $120,000.
SAPS said the arrest is the third involving a suspected drug mule at OR Tambo Airport in the past three weeks.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court later this week on drug trafficking-related charges.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the suspected drugs and whether the suspect is linked to a wider trafficking network.
