The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has announced plans to strictly enforce its sanitation by-laws as part of efforts to improve cleanliness across the municipality.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Freeman Tsekpo, said residents who fail to comply with sanitation regulations will face prosecution, stressing that the Assembly has spent enough time educating the public on proper waste management practices.
Speaking during Ashaiman’s participation in the first National Sanitation Day, Mr. Tsekpo explained that the Assembly had carried out extensive public education campaigns and also engaged shop owners on the need to maintain clean surroundings.
He said with awareness now widespread; the Assembly will shift its focus to enforcing the law.
Hundreds of residents, assembly members, sanitation workers and volunteers joined the clean-up exercise, clearing drains, roadsides and public spaces across sections of the municipality.
The first phase of the exercise covered the stretch from the Ashaiman Roundabout to the Adjei Kojo Under bridge, together with selected electoral areas. A second phase will target the area between the Ashaiman Overhead and the Lebanon School Junction.
Mr. Tsekpo praised residents for their strong participation, describing the turnout as a positive sign that the municipality is embracing President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed national sanitation campaign.
The MCE also expressed concern over the activities of some informal waste collectors, popularly known as “junkies,” whom he accused of collecting refuse from households and dumping it indiscriminately instead of disposing of it at approved sites.
He said the practice continues to undermine efforts to improve sanitation in Ashaiman and assured residents that the Assembly is introducing measures to stop illegal dumping.
According to him, authorities will ensure that waste is transported and disposed of only at designated sites in line with the municipality’s sanitation regulations.
Mr. Tsekpo urged residents to support the Assembly’s efforts by observing sanitation rules and helping to keep Ashaiman clean, warning that anyone found violating the by-laws will be dealt with according to the law.
