BOST, tanker drivers agree to suspend three-day strike

The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) and the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union have reached an agreement to address concerns that led fuel tanker drivers to embark on a three-day sit-down strike.

The agreement is expected to restore normal loading and distribution of petroleum products from the BOST depot in Kumasi, following concerns over safety, loading delays, fuel measurement discrepancies and inadequate parking facilities.

As part of the resolution, union executives in Kumasi will immediately facilitate the resurfacing of the AG car park to provide better parking conditions for tanker operators.

BOST has also engaged a contractor to repair a faulty loading arm at the depot. The defective equipment had reportedly contributed to delays in loading petroleum products.

The company further indicated that plans are underway to construct a new car park at the Kumasi depot, and that stakeholders are expected to receive updates as the project progresses.

Regarding fuel measurement, the union and BOST have agreed to engage the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) in September 2026. The engagement will focus on determining the margin of error among the fuel meters used by the different parties.

The findings from the exercise will be communicated to relevant stakeholders. Drivers had complained that discrepancies in fuel measurements were resulting in shortages, with the financial burden allegedly being transferred to them.

Safety concerns also featured prominently in the drivers’ grievances. They said limited parking space at the depot often forces tankers carrying highly flammable products to park along road shoulders, posing risks to motorists and other road users.

The drivers also complained about the poor state of the existing BOST parking area, particularly during heavy rains when the untarred surface becomes difficult to navigate.

The strike had raised concerns about possible fuel supply disruptions in the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo and Western North regions.

However, following the agreement, the tanker drivers have suspended the industrial action and are expected to resume normal operations while BOST and the union work towards implementing the agreed measures.
