New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary hopeful Sylvester Tetteh has warned party members not to assume that endorsements and public support will automatically translate into victory in the upcoming national executive election.
Sylvester Tetteh believes the final decision will rest with the delegates who will cast their ballots, insisting that the election could produce an unexpected result.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, September 7, the former Bortianor-Ngleshie-Amanfrom Member of Parliament said the NPP’s electoral history showed that candidates who appeared to have strong support could still be defeated at the polls.
“Endorsements do not guarantee winning an election. What happened during John Boadu’s time will happen again. Something shocking is about to happen in Kumasi,” he said.
His comments come as several candidates intensify their campaigns ahead of the NPP’s national officers’ election, with contenders seeking the support of delegates across the country.
Sylvester Tetteh, who is seeking to become the party’s next General Secretary, also pointed to what he described as a pattern involving former General Secretaries who presided over electoral defeats.
He cited Ohene Ntow, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, and John Boadu as examples of General Secretaries who, according to him, were unable to secure another term after leading the party through major electoral setbacks.
“No General Secretary who led the party to a humiliating defeat has ever been re-elected; it happened to Ohene Ntow, Sir John and John Boadu,” he said.
He maintained that delegates would have the final say and urged party members not to treat endorsements as an indication of the eventual outcome.
