France captain Kylian Mbappé has opened up about some of the most difficult defeats of his football career, admitting that losing is an unavoidable part of the game.
Mbappé was speaking about France’s defeat to Spain and whether the result was the hardest loss he has experienced in his career.
The Real Madrid forward said the defeat was painful but admitted that it was difficult to identify one particular match as the hardest to accept.
“It was difficult. The hardest… I don’t know,” Mbappé said when asked if the defeat against Spain was the toughest loss of his career.
The France international pointed to two other major disappointments in his career, losing a World Cup final and a Champions League final.
Mbappé has experienced both the highest and lowest moments in international football. He played a key role in France’s run to the 2022 World Cup final, where he scored a hat-trick against Argentina but ultimately lost on penalties.
He also suffered disappointment at club level after falling short in the Champions League final, despite having established himself as one of Europe’s leading forwards.
The 27-year-old said such defeats are part of football and stressed that no team can expect to win every major competition.
“We can’t always win the World Cup, because it’s not always possible,” he said.
