Black Stars goalkeeping coach Daniel Gasper has expressed satisfaction with the recovery of goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi but says the technical team will take a careful approach before deciding whether he is ready to return to action.
Ati-Zigi suffered an injury during Ghana’s opening Group L match against Panama and was forced off the pitch before being replaced by Benjamin Asare at BMO Stadium in Toronto.
The injury raised concerns ahead of the Black Stars’ crucial FIFA World Cup clash against England.
However, there has been positive news from the Ghana camp after the St. Gallen goalkeeper returned to training on Saturday.
His participation in the session has boosted hopes that he could be available for selection when Ghana faces England on Monday.
Speaking to the media, Gasper said the goalkeeper is making encouraging progress but stressed that the coaching and medical teams will continue to assess his condition carefully before making a final decision.
“We’re extremely happy with his progress. It’s day by day. Obviously, this is a medical issue collaborated with head coach Carlos Queiroz, so we’ll take it session by session,” he said.
According to Gasper, the welfare of the team remains the most important consideration, and no risks will be taken regarding the player’s fitness.
“We’re optimistic, and the decision will be made at the right time. But one thing for sure, we always stress team above individual. Any decision we make is in the best interest of the team,” he added.
Ghana currently has four goalkeepers in camp for the World Cup, providing the technical team with enough options and flexibility.
Gasper has previously explained that the decision to include four goalkeepers was aimed at helping the squad cope with the demands of training sessions, particularly during intensive finishing and crossing drills.
The Black Stars head into Tuesday’s match against England with confidence after securing a 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening game.
A positive result against England would significantly improve Ghana’s chances of progressing from Group L.
Gasper also praised the healthy competition among the goalkeepers, describing the atmosphere in the camp as positive and professional.
He said all four players continue to challenge each other daily as they strive to improve and contribute to the team’s success.
