Six die in tragic road crashes across Volta Region

Six people have died and 34 others were rescued after three separate road crashes in the Volta Region on Sunday, June 21, 2026, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The first incidents happened along the Todome stretch near Kpeve on the Peki–Kpeve Road.

Firefighters from the Peki Fire Station responded after receiving an emergency call at 12:53 GMT about two crashes that occurred at the same location.

One of the crashes involved a MAN Diesel TGS truck with registration number GT 9993-18, which was travelling from Tema to Tamale, and a Toyota Camry with registration number GE 735-14, travelling from Nkwanta to Accra.

All five people involved in that crash, made up of four men and one woman, had already been rescued before firefighters arrived. Both vehicles suffered partial damage.

The second crash involved a Metro Mass Transit bus with registration number AS 4984-09, which was travelling from Accra to Dambai with 28 passengers on board.

Firefighters rescued and extricated 24 victims, including seven men and 17 women. The injured were taken to the Peki Government Hospital for treatment.

Sadly, four people, one man and three women, died at the scene.

Their bodies were later handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigations.

In another incident at the Ho Civic Centre, a rescue team from the Ho Regional Fire Headquarters responded to a road crash after receiving a distress call at 13:04 GMT.

Led by ADO II Seth Sarfo, the team arrived at the scene within two minutes and immediately began rescue operations.

The accident involved a Hyundai Mighty truck with registration number GE 342-11, a Pragya tricycle with registration number 26-VR 455, and an unregistered motorbike.

A total of 10 victims were rescued and rushed to the Ho Municipal Hospital and Ho Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.

However, follow-up checks at the hospitals later confirmed that two injured men had died, bringing the total death toll from the three crashes to six.

The vehicles involved suffered different levels of damage, while investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of the accidents.
