Detained Asante Akyem North MP is in good condition — Dafeamekpor

Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has confirmed that the detained Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, is in stable condition following his detention at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Mr. Dafeamekpor disclosed that the legislator is “doing well in custody” as Parliament and Ghanaian diplomatic officials continue engagements over the matter.

According to him, preliminary information available to Parliament suggests that the detention may be linked to a warrant reportedly issued by authorities in the United States, although the exact details and contents of the warrant are yet to be officially disclosed to Parliament.

“He is in stable condition and doing well,” Mr. Dafeamekpor stated while providing an update on the situation.

He also clarified reports circulating online suggesting that the MP had been arrested while travelling to the United States.

According to the Majority Chief Whip, Kwame Ohene Frimpong was actually on a private visit to the United Kingdom, where his family resides.

“That is most inaccurate. The Honourable Member was on a private visit to the United Kingdom. He has a family there, his wife and children live in London,” Mr. Dafeamekpor explained.

He further noted that Mr. Frimpong was travelling on a KLM flight when he was detained at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

Parliament earlier confirmed the detention in a statement signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.

The statement indicated that the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House were already engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain detailed information surrounding the incident.

However, Parliament has not officially disclosed the exact reason for the detention, and Dutch authorities have yet to comment publicly on the matter.
