Electricity transmission company Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed that it is working to restore power after a major disruption on the National Interconnected Transmission System caused outages in several parts of Ghana in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
According to GRIDCo, the incident occurred at about 3:11 a.m., leading to a widespread interruption in electricity supply after a number of power generation plants connected to the national grid shut down simultaneously.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the company explained that its engineers and system operators immediately activated emergency restoration procedures to minimise the impact of the outage.
GRIDCo said it is collaborating closely with other players in the power sector to restore electricity safely and as quickly as possible while maintaining the stability of the national grid.
The company stressed that restoring power remains its top priority and assured consumers that every effort is being made to return the system to normal operations without compromising safety.
Meanwhile, GRIDCo has launched investigations into the incident to determine what caused the unexpected disturbance.
Technical experts have begun a comprehensive assessment of the transmission system to identify the source of the fault and recommend measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Although the company has not yet disclosed the exact cause of the outage, it noted that the findings of the investigation will be communicated to the public once the assessment is complete.
The power transmission company also apologised to customers affected by the blackout, acknowledging the inconvenience caused to homes, businesses and other institutions that rely on a stable electricity supply.
GRIDCo appealed to the public to remain patient as restoration work continues across the affected areas.
It assured consumers that updates would be provided as progress is made and more information becomes available from the ongoing technical investigations.
