Christian Council demands amended anti-LGBTQ+ Bill for review

The Christian Council of Ghana says it will officially request a copy of the amended Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, for a detailed legal review before taking any public position on the matter.

The Council explained that it was involved in the early stages of drafting the bill and therefore considers it important to study any new exemptions or amendments that may have been introduced.

Speaking at the launch of the Voice of the Christian Council of Ghana on Friday, June 5, Chairman of the Ecumenical Convention Planning Committee, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, said the Council would depend on legal guidance before commenting on the revised provisions.

He added that the group would avoid making further public statements until it had thoroughly examined the bill.

“We cannot speak in a vacuum. We have been advised, and so the Christian Council will do the proper thing by writing officially to the Clerk of Parliament for a copy of the Bill that has been passed.

“Whatever is happening in Parliament, we leave that for the MPs; the Christian Council is not part of it. The Christian Council will come out with a very refined and considered opinion,” he said.

His comments come after Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin directed Parliament to revisit the already passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, following consultations aimed at building a broader consensus on the legislation.

On Tuesday, June 2, the Speaker called for further discussions between the Majority and Minority leadership, citing concerns about the process that led to the passage of the bill.

Mr Bagbin said he was surprised the bill was fully passed on Friday, May 29, explaining that he had expected Parliament to proceed only to the Consideration Stage before final approval.

He stressed that, due to the strong public interest surrounding the legislation, broader consultation and consensus-building were necessary before moving forward.
