One person has sustained serious injuries following a crash involving four vehicles on the Ofankor–Pokuase stretch of the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning, August 19, just days after another fatal crash on the same stretch claimed 11 lives and left several others injured.
The vehicles involved in the latest incident were a VIP bus, a military vehicle, a Toyota Vitz and a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
Although no deaths were recorded, one person suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a health facility for medical attention.
The crash has also caused significant traffic congestion on the Kumasi-bound section of the highway, leaving motorists stuck in heavy traffic and facing delays.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about road safety on the Ofankor–Pokuase corridor, particularly around the John Teye descent, which has been associated with several accidents over the years.
Ga North Municipal Chief Executive, Akwetey Agbo, has blamed driver indiscipline for the frequent crashes and called for stronger measures to control speeding on the stretch.
According to him, motorists descending from the John Teye area towards Pokuase must reduce their speed and exercise greater caution.
Mr Agbo said drivers who obey traffic regulations should be able to navigate the relatively short stretch safely without causing accidents.
He called for continuous road safety education and the installation of speed cameras to monitor motorists and enforce speed limits.
“We have to mount speed limit cameras on this stretch. Any driver who falls foul of the law must be dealt with,” he said.
The Ofankor–Pokuase corridor has recorded several serious accidents in the past. In 2016, a truck reportedly suffered brake failure while descending from John Teye and crashed into seven vehicles, resulting in two deaths and three injuries.
Recent concerns about poor street lighting and ongoing road construction have also added to safety and traffic challenges along parts of the corridor.
