Ankobra faces looming flood disaster without sea defence – Assembly Member

The Assembly Member for the Ankobra Electoral Area, Patrick Assuah, has called on the government to urgently construct a sea defence wall and proper drainage systems to curb recurring tidal flooding in the community.

He warned that parts of Ankobra-Sanwoma in the Ellembelle District are increasingly vulnerable, with rising sea levels and tidal waves frequently submerging sections of the town and displacing residents.

Speaking in an interview, Mr Assuah described the situation as deteriorating, noting that flooding has become a regular occurrence, posing serious risks to lives and property.

A visit to the banks of the River Ankobra revealed signs of overflow, with water levels rising due to tidal surges from the sea.

Mr Assuah attributed the situation partly to the ongoing sea defence project at nearby Axim, alleging that it has redirected tidal pressure towards Ankobra.

He cautioned that without urgent intervention, the community could face severe flooding with potentially devastating consequences.

The Assembly Member has therefore appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation to draw government attention to the looming threat and push for the construction of a sea defence wall to avert a possible disaster.
