At least eleven people have died, and 13 have been seriously injured after a tipper truck crashed into a Sprinter bus at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The accident occurred in the early morning of Thursday, August 13, 2026, leaving the Sprinter bus severely damaged and several passengers trapped in the wreckage.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have been deployed to the scene to rescue victims and provide emergency assistance.
According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the GNFS, rescue teams from the service’s headquarters are using specialized cutting equipment to break through the mangled bus and reach passengers who are still trapped.
Some of the injured have already been transported to health facilities for medical attention.
Among them is a female passenger who reportedly suffered severe injuries, with her legs said to have been severed during the collision.
The rescue operation has been described as challenging, with the GNFS indicating that the situation at the scene remains volatile as personnel work to safely remove victims from the damaged vehicle.
The crash has also caused significant disruption to traffic along the busy highway.
Parts of the main carriageway have been restricted to allow emergency responders to carry out rescue operations and clear the accident scene.
Motorists traveling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra have been advised to use the outer lane and approach the area with extreme caution.
The GNFS has also appealed to motorists and other road users to cooperate with emergency personnel by slowing down and giving rescue teams enough space to work.
