The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the Ashanti Region has reported a drop in fire cases in early 2026.
Between January and March, 348 fire incidents were recorded, compared to 385 during the same period in 2025.
Even though the number of fires has gone down, the Service says attacks on firefighters are still a big problem. These attacks make it harder for officers to do their work and protect lives and property.
Speaking during an event in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, Peter Tetteh, said they will increase public education and urged people to stop attacking fire officers during emergencies.
He also encouraged residents to help prevent fires and support firefighters when incidents happen, saying community cooperation is very important.
According to him, the Fire Service will expand fire safety education in markets to help reduce frequent market fires. He explained that the inter-market fire safety quiz was created to teach traders simple ways to control fires early before they get out of hand.
Some traders who took part said they learned useful and practical tips on how to prevent and fight fires.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Kejetia Market, Ernest Afayam, said management will also improve fire safety education. He added that steps are being taken to keep pathways clear in the market so firefighters can easily move in during emergencies.
At the end of the competition, Tafo came first, Breman placed second, Mampongten took third place, and Kejetia finished fourth.
