The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that one firefighter sustained injuries while combating the severe fire outbreak that took place near the Accra Central Police Station on Wednesday, June 4, 2026.
The Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Alex King Nartey, revealed that the injured officer is the sole casualty reported in the incident, which resulted in the destruction of a building and its contents due to the fire’s intensity.
Speaking in an interview, Mr. Nartey elaborated that the firefighter suffered serious injuries when the metallic end of a fire hose detached from the pump during operations and struck him in the chest.
”But as we speak, he is responding to treatment at the police hospital.”
In spite of the damage inflicted by the fire, Mr. Nartey stated that firefighters successfully prevented the blaze from spreading to adjacent structures. He mentioned that while the building where the fire started was destroyed, neighbouring buildings were preserved.
”The challenge was accessibility because you realise that, in that area, working through it on a regular day is not even easy. How much more is a fire tender with this big tank? So we had challenges getting to the scene. Again, interference from people proved to be a very big challenge because people were not giving us the room to operate,” he stated in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Channel One TV.
