The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has assured the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ Bill, will be reviewed and passed before Parliament adjourns for recess on Friday, July 31, 2026.
Mr. Bagbin stated that the bill, in its present form, necessitates further examination, particularly concerning three significant clauses related to sentencing provisions.
He emphasized that this reconsideration is essential to address concerns regarding the punishment framework outlined in the legislation prior to its return to the House for final deliberation.
During a visit to the National Chief Imam, the Speaker expressed Parliament’s intention to finalize the process before the recess, asserting that the issue should not be perceived through a political lens.
“Our intention is to do it before we go on recess. We are likely to do so even by tomorrow so that it assures you that the members you elected to Parliament are doing what you have asked them to do,” he stated.
There is no politics at all. Anybody who wants to take political advantage, just disregard it. Both Muslims and Christians agree, even the unbelievers know that if we don’t pass it, we are acting against the decree of God,” Mr. Bagbin added.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has sparked extensive public discourse since its reintroduction in Parliament, with proponents arguing that it embodies Ghanaian cultural and religious values, while critics have expressed concerns regarding certain elements of the legislation.
Mr. Bagbin’s remarks come as Parliament gears up for recess, with focus now on whether the House will complete its consideration of the outstanding provisions before the deadline.
