The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has formally requested a review of public transport fares, citing the need to follow the established process for determining charges for commercial road transport services.
The request was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, September 3, 2026, and jointly associated with the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC).
According to the GPRTU, the request has been submitted to the Ministry of Transport in accordance with the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares.
The Union explained that the review process is part of an established consultative framework that considers the various factors affecting the operations of commercial transport providers.
These factors include the costs involved in running transport services, although the Union did not indicate a specific percentage increase or propose new fares in its statement.
The GPRTU said discussions with the Ministry of Transport will begin soon as part of the process.
It stressed that the final outcome of the consultations will be communicated to the public after the engagement with the Ministry is completed.
The latest development does not amount to an immediate increase in transport fares, as the Union is yet to conclude discussions with the Ministry of Transport.
Passengers have therefore been advised to await an official announcement on any changes to fares.
The GPRTU and GRTCC said they will communicate the outcome of the review process once consultations with the Ministry are completed.
