Six persons, including three Chinese nationals, have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man at a galamsey site at Gwira Ampansie in the Nzema East District of the Western Region.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Angu Mensah, popularly known in the community as the Abusuapanyin (Clan Head) of Gwira Ampansie. He reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the chest during a confrontation at the illegal mining site on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The six suspects, currently in police custody are Hamza Abubakar, Hamidu Seidu, Francis Biewose, Bai Yaozheng, Liu Gang, and Wen Xien Wen.
According to the Western Regional Police Command, officers at Axim received a distress call at about 1:20 pm on Sunday reporting a shooting incident at the mining site.
A team from the Axim Police Command, together with personnel from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, was immediately dispatched to the area.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the shooting occurred around 11:45 am following a misunderstanding between the deceased and some individuals operating at the mining site.
Police say during the confrontation, a suspect identified as Alfred Sadick, popularly known as “Strongman,” allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Angu Mensah in the chest.
“One Alfred Sadick, alias ‘Strongman,’ shot him in the chest,” a statement from the police said.
The main suspect, Strongman, is currently on the run, with police announcing that efforts are underway to track and arrest him.
“Efforts are underway to get the suspect Alfred Sadick, also known as ‘Strong Man,’ arrested,” the police stated.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Western Regional Police Command is appealing to the public to volunteer any credible information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect known as Strongman by contacting the Regional Police Command or the Axim Police Station.
