Parliament to summon GFA, Sports Ministry over Black Stars crisis

Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports is set to invite officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to account for the Black Stars’ recent struggles.

The planned engagement follows a disappointing start to Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, which has left the four-time African champions facing renewed concerns over their prospects.

The Black Stars suffered a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium in their second Group C qualifier, despite establishing a commanding 2-0 lead during the match.

The result came after Ghana had already lost their opening qualifier to Ivory Coast, leaving the team without a point from their first two matches. Ghana currently sit at the bottom of Group C, while Ivory Coast and The Gambia have each collected six points.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Sports Committee, Ernest Henry Norgbey, said the committee intends to engage key stakeholders to understand the problems affecting the national team.

“We plan to invite the GFA, the Minister, purposely and specifically to interrogate what actually is happening to Ghana football, especially when it comes to the Black Stars,” he said.

The parliamentary intervention comes amid growing concern over the Black Stars’ recent form. According to the report, Ghana have won only one of their last eight matches across all competitions and have not recorded an AFCON qualifying victory since September 2023.

The latest poor results have also heightened fears that Ghana could miss consecutive AFCON tournaments, making the upcoming qualifiers increasingly important for the Black Stars.
