The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has identified more than 100 tertiary institutions operating without recognition as of September 2026 and cautioned prospective students and parents to be careful when considering enrolment.
In a statement on unrecognised tertiary institutions, GTEC said the institutions listed have not received recognition from the Commission.
The Commission noted that the operations of these institutions, as well as the qualifications they offer, remain subject to concerns raised through its quality assurance processes.
GTEC advised prospective students and parents to confirm the recognition status of tertiary institutions before enrolling.
It also encouraged the public to carry out the necessary checks before accepting or relying on certificates issued by institutions whose recognition status has not been confirmed.
The Commission further urged members of the public to exercise due diligence when dealing with certificates obtained from the listed institutions, especially before using them for employment, further education or other official purposes.
GTEC said prospective students should establish whether an institution is recognised before committing their time and resources to any programme.
The warning is part of the Commission’s broader efforts to ensure tertiary education providers in Ghana comply with the required regulatory and quality assurance standards.
GTEC said members of the public should depend on the Commission’s official information when determining whether a tertiary institution has been recognised.
The latest list published by the Commission covers institutions identified as unrecognised as of September 2026.
