Mbappé becomes France’s all-time leading scorer with 58 goals

Kylian Mbappé has made football history after becoming France’s all-time leading goal scorer, surpassing Olivier Giroud’s previous record of 57 goals for the national team.

The 26-year-old forward reached the milestone after scoring twice in France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup fixture on Tuesday night.

His brace took his international tally to 58 goals in just 99 appearances, setting a new benchmark in French football history.

Mbappé’s achievement underlines his rapid rise as one of the most dominant forwards in world football. Since making his debut for France in 2017 as a teenager, he has consistently delivered in major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship.

He first announced himself on the global stage during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where he scored four goals and helped France lift the trophy.

He also played a key role in France’s run to the 2022 World Cup final, where he scored a hat-trick against Argentina in one of the most memorable finals in football history.

Breaking Giroud’s record marks another major milestone in Mbappé’s career. Giroud, who retired from international duty earlier, had set the record at 57 goals after overtaking Thierry Henry’s long-standing tally of 51.

Mbappé’s scoring rate places him among the most efficient international forwards in modern football history. Reaching 58 goals in fewer than 100 matches puts him ahead of many legendary strikers in terms of goal-per-game ratio.

Beyond international football, Mbappé continues to shine at the club level, where he remains one of Europe’s most prolific attackers. His pace, finishing ability and consistency have made him a key figure for both club and country.

France head coach Didier Deschamps has often described Mbappé as a “decisive player” capable of changing matches at any moment, a reputation that has only grown stronger with time.

With several years ahead in his career, Mbappé is expected to extend his record further and possibly set a new all-time benchmark that may stand for decades.
