The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a new welfare programme to support former national team players who are facing health challenges.
The initiative, known as the GFA Foundation Player Welfare Initiative, will provide financial assistance towards the healthcare needs of eligible former Black Stars players and other former national team representatives.
GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku announced the programme during the 32nd Ordinary Session of the GFA Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Under the initiative, the GFA Foundation will allocate US$50,000 every year for four years to support former national team players with medical needs.
The programme will therefore involve a total financial commitment of US$200,000 over the four years.
President Simeon-Okraku said the initiative was intended to recognise the contributions of former national players who dedicated their careers to representing Ghana.
He noted that many former players had brought honour and pride to the country through their performances and sacrifices on the football field.
According to the GFA President, some of these former players continue to face serious health challenges after retiring from active football.
He said the football community has a responsibility to support them during difficult periods in their lives.
The initiative will establish a dedicated welfare fund through the GFA Foundation, which will provide healthcare assistance to former national team players who meet the requirements for support.
The GFA believes the programme will provide much-needed relief to former players who may struggle to meet medical expenses after their playing careers.
The four-year commitment is also expected to strengthen the association’s efforts to improve the welfare of people who have contributed to the development and success of Ghanaian football.
