Ian Wright has criticised Arsenal following their performance in last night’s match against Atlético Madrid, describing it as a “horrible football”.
Speaking after the game which ended a 1-1 draw, the former Arsenal striker did not hold back. He said the team lacked energy and urgency throughout the match.
“No intensity, no urgency, nothing,” Wright said.
He added that Arsenal was fortunate not to suffer a heavier defeat, claiming Atlético could have easily scored three or four goals if they had been more clinical in front of goal.
Wright also singled out key players for criticism, starting with Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard. According to him, the midfielder has seen a drop in form and failed to influence the game.
“This is supposed to be your captain, your creative engine and he’s just missing. Invisible,” Wright said, questioning his leadership on the pitch.
Attention then turned to star winger Bukayo Saka. While acknowledging his talent, Wright insisted the young forward must step up in crucial moments.
“Big games, big moments, that’s where you prove yourself. Tonight? Not good enough,” he stated.
Wright did not spare Eberechi Eze either, criticising an incident where the player went down easily in the box. He described it as a poor decision and said such actions reflect a weak mentality.
“Why are you going down when you can stay up, shoot, and score?” he questioned, adding that the player was lucky to avoid a booking.
Overall, Wright believes Arsenal’s performance fell far below the standard expected of a top team. He warned that stronger opponents will punish such displays.
“Top teams punish mistakes,” he said, stressing that Arsenal looked vulnerable and fortunate the result was not worse.
