Ecuador produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage by coming from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 and secure a place in the Round of 32.
La Tri entered their final Group E match knowing that only a positive result would keep their hopes of progressing alive.
Against a German side that had already secured qualification, Ecuador delivered a spirited and determined performance to write a new chapter in the nation’s football history.
Germany made the perfect start when Leroy Sané found the net just two minutes into the match, putting the four-time world champions ahead and seemingly on course for another victory.
However, Ecuador refused to be intimidated and responded quickly through Nilson Angulo, whose ninth-minute strike levelled the score and gave the South Americans renewed belief.
The match remained finely balanced for much of the contest, with Ecuador showing remarkable resilience against one of world football’s traditional powerhouses.
Their persistence paid off late in the game when Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive goal in the 77th minute, sparking wild celebrations among Ecuadorian supporters.
The victory secured Ecuador’s passage to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
It marks only the second time in the country’s history that they have reached the World Cup knockout rounds and their first appearance beyond the group stage since the 2006 tournament in Germany.
Ecuador’s qualification is particularly impressive considering their difficult start to the competition.
They had managed just one point from their opening two matches and faced the daunting task of taking on a Germany side that had already qualified as group winners.
