Asante Kotoko appoints Stanley Menzo as director of football

Ghana Premier League giants Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have announced the appointment of renowned Dutch football figure Stanley Purl Menzo as the club’s new Director of Football.

The appointment, which takes effect immediately, forms part of the club’s ongoing efforts to rebuild its football structure and return the Porcupine Warriors to the top of Ghanaian and African football.

The announcement was made by the club’s Board of Directors on Monday, June 8, 2026.

Menzo, 62, arrives in Kumasi with a wealth of experience both as a player and coach. Widely respected in world football, he enjoyed a successful playing career as a goalkeeper, spending ten seasons with Dutch giants AFC Ajax, where he made over 300 appearances and won several major trophies.

He was part of the Ajax side that lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987 and the UEFA Cup in 1992.

The former Netherlands international also represented his country at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy and played for notable European clubs including PSV Eindhoven, Lierse S.K. and FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

After retiring from active football, Menzo built an extensive coaching and management career across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.

His managerial journey includes spells with clubs such as Ajax Cape Town, FC Volendam, SC Cambuur and Beijing Guoan, while he also managed the national teams of Aruba and Suriname. Most recently, he guided Suriname during its World Cup qualifying campaign.

In his new role, Menzo will oversee all football-related operations at Asante Kotoko, including player recruitment, technical development, youth progression and the integration of the club’s academy with the senior team.

He will also supervise technical matters until a substantive head coach is appointed.

Executive Chairman James Osei Brown described the appointment as a major step forward for the club, stating that Menzo’s vast experience, leadership qualities and football philosophy align with Kotoko’s ambitions.

Speaking after his appointment, Menzo expressed his excitement about joining one of Africa’s most celebrated clubs. He said the passion of the supporters and the vision of the club’s leadership convinced him to take up the challenge.

The appointment has generated excitement among the club’s supporters, who will be hoping the experienced Dutchman can help restore Asante Kotoko to its former glory both locally and on the continental stage.
