Port City FC and Ashantigold marked their historic entry into the Ghana Premier League with an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Daasebre Boamah Darko II Park on Sunday.
The match was significant as both clubs were making their first appearances in Ghana’s top-flight league, but neither side was able to claim all three points.
Ashantigold started the brighter of the two teams and took the lead in the first half through Zak Musah.
The visitors then had a major opportunity to extend their advantage shortly after the restart when they were awarded a penalty.
However, Port City goalkeeper Abdul Aziz produced an outstanding double save to deny Ashantigold and keep the home side within touching distance of an equaliser.
His saves proved crucial as Port City responded strongly and eventually drew level in the 66th minute.
Captain Hamza Zakari rose above the Ashantigold defence to head the ball into the net, sending the home supporters into celebration and securing Port City’s first-ever Premier League goal.
Both teams continued to search for a winning goal in the closing stages, but neither could find the decisive finish.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, giving both debutants a valuable point from their historic first league appearance.
Port City will now turn their attention to their next challenge against defending champions Medeama SC, who will be away on international duty.
Ashantigold, meanwhile, will return to Obuasi to host Vision FC as they continue their first campaign in the country’s top division.
