We won’t spare members behind election violence – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has pledged to take disciplinary action against any member found guilty of violence or other criminal offences during its ongoing constituency executive elections, insisting that no one will be shielded from accountability.

The party said it will first allow the Ghana Police Service and other relevant state institutions to complete their investigations before initiating its own internal disciplinary processes.

According to the NPP, any sanctions imposed will depend on the outcome of investigations and the nature of the offences established.

The party stressed that all disciplinary decisions will be guided by due process and the provisions of its constitution.

The assurance comes after incidents of violence, disturbances and legal disputes were reported in some constituencies during the party’s constituency executive elections.

The incidents have resulted in police investigations and court actions in some areas, raising concerns about the conduct of the internal polls.

Speaking after Saturday polls, July 11, the NPP’s Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, said the party would not interfere with the work of law enforcement agencies and would only determine its disciplinary measures after investigations have been concluded.

“It depends on the weight of the investigations or the crime that has been committed,” he said.

He noted that criminal conduct could also affect a member’s eligibility to contest for or continue to hold party office, adding that the party’s constitution provides clear guidelines for dealing with such cases.

According to him, where the circumstances require, the NPP will invoke the relevant constitutional provisions to sanction offending members, including those serving in executive positions.

Mr Mohammed reiterated the party’s commitment to the rule of law, saying the NPP remains determined to ensure that its internal elections are conducted peacefully, fairly and in line with democratic principles.
