Residents of Kumasi and several surrounding communities are expected to experience interruptions in water supply next week as Ghana Water Limited (GWL) carries out critical maintenance works at the Barekese Water Treatment Plant.
In a press release issued on June 5, 2026, the Ashanti Regional management of GWL announced that the plant will be temporarily shut down to allow engineers to repair a key transmission pipeline.
According to the company, the maintenance work is necessary to protect the integrity of the pipeline and ensure the continued reliable operation of the water treatment facility.
The shutdown is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, and will remain in effect until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
During this period, water production and supply from the Barekese Water Treatment Plant will be suspended, affecting customers in the Kumasi Metropolitan Area and nearby communities that depend on the facility for their water supply.
Ghana Water Limited explained that the repairs form part of efforts to improve the sustainability and reliability of water delivery services in the region.
The company noted that although the maintenance exercise may cause inconvenience to residents and businesses, it is essential for preventing future disruptions and maintaining efficient operations at the treatment plant.
The utility provider has therefore advised residents, institutions, and businesses within the affected areas to store enough water ahead of the shutdown to meet their needs throughout the maintenance period.
Management of GWL expressed regret for the inconvenience the temporary interruption may cause and appealed to customers for patience and cooperation while the repair works are undertaken.
The company also assured the public that water production and supply will resume immediately after the successful completion of the maintenance exercise.
The Barekese Water Treatment Plant is one of the major sources of potable water for Kumasi and parts of the Ashanti Region, making the planned maintenance operation an important undertaking for the long-term stability of water services.
