The Queenmother of Weija, Naa Ama Kuma Otuabom II, has challenged the government to prioritise the completion of an abandoned STEM school project instead of focusing on a new 24-hour economy market in the area.
She said the unfinished school is urgently needed because Weija has no public second-cycle institution, forcing parents to send their children to schools outside the community.
The STEM school was started under the previous government led by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo but has remained incomplete following the change in administration.
The facility, which is said to be about 70 per cent complete, has reportedly been left exposed to weeds and reptiles.
Naa Ama Kuma Otuabom II expressed frustration over the delay, questioning why a project that is already substantially completed has not been finished.
She also questioned the decision to prioritise a 24-hour economy market when residents already have a market serving their daily needs.
“We don’t need the 24-hour market. We have a market that we buy from. So, what is important is education. We need schools; we don’t need a 24-hour market,” she said.
Meanwhile, Weija-Gbawe MP Jerry Ahmed Shaib said he had repeatedly engaged the Education Ministry over the stalled project.
According to him, officials have assured him that the school will be completed, but he wants concrete action rather than promises.
He said the facility could accommodate at least 1,000 students when completed and would significantly improve access to secondary education in the constituency.
“Our very humble prayer is that they complete the STEM school,” he said, stressing that residents are waiting to see the project completed and put to use.
