Zoomlion reopen Achimota Transfer Station to tackle post-flood waste crisis

Zoomlion Ghana Limited, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has reopened the Achimota-Abofu Transfer Station to address the growing waste management challenges caused by the recent floods in the Greater Accra Region.

The facility was officially reopened following an inspection by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, who described the move as a critical intervention to restore efficient waste collection and prevent a looming public health crisis.

According to the minister, the floods rendered several landfill sites inaccessible after they were inundated, leaving thousands of waste collectors unable to dispose of refuse collected from households, markets, and commercial areas. This resulted in the accumulation of waste in several parts of the capital, raising concerns about sanitation and the possible outbreak of diseases.

Mr. Ibrahim said the reopening of the Achimota Transfer Station would provide immediate relief for waste collectors, particularly the tricycle operators, popularly known as aboboyaa, who have struggled to offload waste since the flooding.

“The reopening of this transfer station is a practical solution to ensure waste collected across the city is properly managed while work continues to restore access to our landfill sites,” the minister said.

He commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited for its swift response and continued partnership with the government in addressing the sanitation challenges facing the capital. He also acknowledged the support of the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Security Secretariat, the Office of the President, and other stakeholders who contributed to the emergency response.

The Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, said the reopening of the transfer station would significantly improve waste collection operations and help restore cleanliness in flood-affected communities.

He noted that the facility would serve as a temporary waste reception point, enabling refuse to be transferred to designated disposal sites once access to the affected landfill facilities is fully restored.

The minister further disclosed that the government would engage private waste management companies, transfer station operators, and informal waste collectors to develop a sustainable strategy for improving waste management infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted sanitation services during emergencies.
