Oppong Nkrumah claims over 16 NPP activists arrested under NDC government

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi and former Information Minister, has claimed that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has arrested more than 16 members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) since it took office.

He made the claim in an interview on May 19, 2026, saying the arrests were linked to social media posts and comments that the government did not like.

“Over sixteen NPP persons have been arrested for simply making comments on social media or posting things on social media that the government finds unpalatable,” he claimed.

He made these remarks while speaking about the arrest and detention of NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe.

“In the case of Kwame Baffoe Abronye, he was earlier arrested, denied bail and now, Abronye has been detained from last Wednesday till today as I am speaking to you,” he added.

Oppong Nkrumah also said that since Abronye DC’s arrest, his family, political allies, and lawyers have not been allowed access to him.

He further accused the government of using arrests, detention, and remand as a way to silence people who criticise it.

According to him, the aim is to scare people into silence, especially at a time when he believes the government is not delivering on its promises.

“The whole idea is to intimidate people and ensure that everybody keeps quiet when they are failing on delivering on the promises they made to the Ghanaian people,” he added.

He said the NPP will respond through both public engagement and legal action.

“We will use the platforms of public advocacy to call that out as well while we do what is necessary through the judicial system,” he stated.
