May 1 declared national holiday for workers

The Ministry of  Interior has officially declared this coming Friday, May 1, 2026, as a national holiday to celebrate Workers’ Day.

In a signed release on April 27, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak encouraged citizens across every region to pause and recognise the holiday.

“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, May 1, 2026, marks Workers’ Day (May Day), which is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the official statement noted.

While the world honours May Day to thank the workforce for building modern nations, Ghana adds its own vibrant touch to the festivities.

On this day, labour leaders and government representatives usually meet at parade grounds to deliver speeches and review the progress of the Ghanaian worker.

Beyond the marches and music, the holiday provides a vital moment for “Organized Labour” to sit down with the government.

These groups use the event to advocate for better pay, safer offices, and stronger job protection for everyone in the country.
