Police foil robbery plot, recover assault weapons

The Ghana Police Service has foiled a planned robbery attack and recovered a cache of weapons linked to a suspected robbery syndicate operating across parts of the country.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department and the Ashanti North Regional Police following intelligence gathering on the activities of a wanted robbery suspect.

According to a police statement, officers moved in on 23-year-old Ali Mohammed on June 2, 2026, at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region.

The suspect had been on the police wanted list for his alleged involvement in a number of violent robberies and killings.

Police said Ali Mohammed was wanted in connection with the shooting and murder of Dominic Frimpong on the Akyiresu–Kwame Dwomo Sreso road in the Ahafo Region on April 12, 2026.

He was also being sought over two separate robbery incidents that occurred at Bosomkyekye on the Mampong–Ejura road in July 2025 and February 2026. One of those attacks reportedly led to the death of a driver’s mate.

During the operation, the suspect allegedly opened fire on the police team with an AK-47 rifle. Officers returned fire and overpowered him.

He sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and was rushed to the Goaso Government Hospital for treatment. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities have appealed to the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects as investigations continue.
