Four vehicles were involved in a collision at Tech Junction-Top High in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred around 7:15 a.m. during the peak rush hour after an ambulance with registration number GV 554-24 allegedly attempted to manoeuvre through heavy traffic.
According to eyewitnesses, the ambulance was travelling along the Ejisu stretch with its siren on when it tried to move between vehicles that had stopped at a red traffic light.
However, there was not enough space for the ambulance to pass. It reportedly hit two vehicles, which were pushed into two others ahead of them, resulting in four vehicles being affected.
“The ambulance was in a hurry and tried to pass through the middle. But the cars were already packed because of the red light. That’s how it hit the first car and pushed it into the others,” said one of the drivers whose vehicle was affected.
“We heard the siren, but the cars were already packed because the traffic light was red. The ambulance should have used the other lane. We understand the urgency, but the road was blocked. You can’t force your way and expect other drivers to just disappear,” another motorist at the scene said.
Speaking off camera, the ambulance driver explained that he was transporting a patient to hospital in an emergency and had to move through the traffic quickly.
Following the crash, authorities called for a backup ambulance, which arrived at the scene and transported the patient to hospital.
Personnel from the Adum Division of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service later arrived to manage traffic, document the incident and assess the damage.
No deaths or injuries were recorded, according to eyewitnesses.
All four vehicles reportedly sustained damage, mainly to their bumpers and fenders.
The crash caused a temporary traffic build-up along the Top High stretch as tow trucks worked to remove the damaged vehicles from the road.
