The Ghana Police Service has arrested a taxi driver and seized four sacks of substances suspected to be Indian hemp during an anti-narcotics operation at Tsopoli in the Greater Accra Region.
The arrest was carried out by the Tema Regional Police Command as part of two separate operations aimed at clamping down on the trafficking, transportation, and unlawful possession of narcotic drugs
Police said officers from the Prampram District Police acted on intelligence received around 5:00 p.m. indicating that an Opel taxi cab and a Hyundai H100 bus were transporting several sacks of suspected Indian hemp.
According to the Police, the Hyundai H100 bus managed to escape, while the taxi diverted onto the Agotor–Kpatsredor Road towards Tsopoli in an attempt to evade arrest.
The taxi was eventually intercepted with the assistance of commercial motorbike riders in Tsopoli, leading to the arrest of the driver, identified as Eric Tetteh.
A search of the vehicle uncovered four sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, which were seized as exhibits.
During interrogation, police said Eric Tetteh allegedly admitted transporting the suspected narcotics from a village near Akuse.
Investigators also disclosed that a fifth sack, believed to have been part of the consignment, was removed before the taxi was intercepted.
The suspect, the vehicle and the recovered exhibits have been taken to the Tsopoli Police Station to assist with investigations.
Police say efforts are underway to identify and arrest the individuals who allegedly removed the missing sack, as well as trace the Hyundai H100 bus that escaped during the operation.
