NADMO has demolished three out of 16 identified unsafe structures in Accra as part of efforts to prevent disasters and protect lives following recent flooding incidents and building collapses in parts of the capital.
The exercise, being carried out in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and other relevant agencies, targets buildings that have been declared structurally weak and pose imminent danger to occupants and the public.
Dennis Nartey, said three of the 16 structures marked for demolition had already been pulled down, with work ongoing to remove the remaining buildings.
“Out of the 16 structures identified as unsafe, we have successfully demolished three. The remaining structures will also be dealt with as we continue the exercise.”
Mr. Nartey explained that the operation forms part of proactive measures to avert disasters, especially during the rainy season when weakened buildings are more likely to collapse.
According to him, inspections conducted by engineers and disaster management officials revealed serious structural defects in the affected buildings, making them unfit for habitation.
“We cannot wait for lives to be lost before taking action. These structures have been assessed and found to be dangerous, so we have a responsibility to act,” he said.
He noted that notices had been served on owners and occupants before the demolition exercise commenced, adding that authorities followed the necessary procedures before moving in.
The Greater Accra NADMO Director stressed that the agency remains committed to protecting lives and property and will continue to collaborate with local assemblies to identify and remove dangerous structures across the region.
“Our priority is public safety. We are urging residents to cooperate with authorities and immediately vacate any structure that has been declared unsafe,” he said.
Mr. Nartey further warned property owners against ignoring directives from city authorities, noting that failure to comply could result in enforcement action.
NADMO says the remaining 13 unsafe structures will be demolished in phases as efforts continue to reduce disaster risks and prevent avoidable tragedies in the Greater Accra Region.
