Driver perishes in violent crash at Ako Adjei Interchange

A fatal road crash at the Ako Adjei Interchange in Accra has claimed the life of one person.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, June 17, 2026, and involved a KIA Rhino truck and a Zedrive saloon car.

The deceased was driving the saloon car, with registration number GW 6334-26. The vehicle crashed into a KIA Rhino truck bearing registration number GE 1120-15, leaving the driver trapped inside the wreckage.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it received a distress call at 1:16 a.m. A rescue team from the GNFS headquarters immediately responded to the emergency.

Led by ADO I Yussif Yakubu, the team arrived at the scene within six minutes. Fire officers found the driver unconscious and pinned inside the badly damaged vehicle.

Medical personnel assessed the victim at the scene and confirmed that he had died.

Rescuers then began an operation to recover the body. They removed parts of the damaged car, including the door and steering wheel, before successfully retrieving the deceased. The exercise ended at 2:14 a.m.

Initial findings suggest that the saloon car ran into the rear of a faulty truck that had been left stationary on the road.

However, authorities are continuing investigations to establish the exact circumstances that led to the collision.

Following the incident, the GNFS reminded motorists to take proper safety measures whenever their vehicles break down on the road.

The Service urged drivers to place reflective warning triangles or other visible warning signs around faulty vehicles, especially at night, to alert approaching motorists and help prevent accidents.

The GNFS also expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and encouraged all road users to drive carefully and obey traffic regulations at all times.
