Chinese businessman remanded over GH¢3 million theft

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a 36-year-old Chinese businessman, Evan Yung, into police custody after he was accused of stealing 440 bundles of T-shirts valued at GH¢3 million from a warehouse in Fadama, Accra.

Yung pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing when he appeared before the court.

Despite his plea, the court ordered that he remain in police custody pending further investigations and legal proceedings.

According to the prosecution, both the accused and the complainant are Chinese nationals who reside in Osu, a suburb of Accra.

The complainant’s identity was withheld during the court proceedings.

Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, who presented the facts of the case, told the court that the complainant travelled to China in May 2025 to care for his sick mother.

Before leaving Ghana, he reportedly entrusted the management of his business and warehouse operations to Yung.

The warehouse, located in Fadama, contained 440 bundles of T-shirts with an estimated value of GH¢3 million.

The prosecution stated that the complainant expected the accused to safeguard the goods and oversee the business in his absence.

However, upon returning to Ghana in November 2025, the complainant discovered that the stock was no longer in the warehouse.

When questioned, Yung allegedly informed him that the merchandise had been sold to various customers. He reportedly claimed that the buyers had failed to make payment for the goods.

The complainant initially gave the accused time to recover the money from the supposed customers or account for the missing stock.

However, after several weeks passed without any satisfactory explanation or reimbursement, he reported the matter to the police.

Investigations were subsequently launched, leading to Yung’s arrest. The prosecution further told the court that during police questioning, the accused admitted to the offence in his caution statement.

Following his arraignment, the court remanded Yung into police custody while the case continues.

The matter is expected to return to court as investigations proceed and prosecutors prepare to present further evidence in support of the charge.
