Minority Leader in Parliament Alexander Kwabena Afenyo-Markin has expressed his assurance to former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo that she will be reinstated if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regains power in 2028.
During the NPP’s “Save the Judiciary” demonstration held in Accra on August 6, 2026, Afenyo-Markin encouraged Torkornoo not to feel disheartened by her removal from office, asserting that the party would restore her position upon returning to power.
“Let me tell the former Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, that she should not be sad. When the NPP returns to power under Bawumia, she will be reinstated as Chief Justice,” he stated.
He further urged NPP supporters to strive for the party’s return to governance, emphasizing that the party is poised to win the 2028 general election.
“Whether the NDC likes it or not, the NPP will assume power in 2028. If you are an NPP member, work hard so that power returns to the party,” Afenyo-Markin remarked.
These comments were made during the opposition party’s “Democracy Under Attack” protest, organized by the NPP leadership along with its Youth Wing.
The demonstration was a response to what the party characterized as political persecution, state-sponsored intimidation, and selective justice under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
Torkornoo’s removal as Chief Justice followed a recommendation from a committee set up to investigate petitions alleging her misconduct.
The committee’s findings raised issues regarding her management of travel expenses for personal trips, which it concluded constituted a misuse of constitutional provisions related to judicial administration.
Her dismissal marked the end of her leadership of Ghana’s judiciary, with the NPP subsequently condemning the process and labeling it a threat to judicial independence.
