The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) not to deny duly admitted boarding students accommodation because of the type of trunk, chop box or storage container they bring to school.
The directive follows reports that some schools have been turning away newly admitted students whose personal storage items do not meet specific requirements set by the schools.
GES said such practices could put additional financial pressure on parents and guardians, particularly those unable to afford specific types or brands of storage containers.
Regional Directors have therefore been instructed to ensure that duly admitted students are not denied admission or boarding accommodation based solely on the type of storage container they use.
The Service, however, said the items must be reasonably sized and safe, and should not pose any risk to the health or welfare of other students.
GES has also directed that complaints involving students being denied accommodation over their storage containers be investigated and reported to Management.
Heads of schools who fail to comply with the directive could face sanctions under applicable GES regulations and laws.
