President John Dramani Mahama says the recent fire at the Akosombo Dam is not just a setback, but also a chance to improve Ghana’s power system.
He made this statement on Thursday, April 30, 2026, when he visited the site to see the damage for himself.
The fire happened at a substation managed by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCO), and it affected important equipment.
The country lost over 1,000 megawatts of electricity, which led to power cuts in many areas.
Speaking to engineers and officials during his visit, President Mahama said this difficult situation could be turned into something positive by rebuilding with better and more modern systems.
He explained that the damage creates an opportunity to install a new and improved control room that can serve the power plant more efficiently for many years to come.
The President also praised the engineers and technical teams for acting quickly to restore power. He noted that progress has already been made, with several parts of the system back up and running.
According to him, four turbines are already working again, and he is hopeful that the remaining two will be fixed soon.
President Mahama also assured workers that the government will continue to support key energy institutions like the Volta River Authority and GRIDCo, since they play a major role in keeping the country’s lights on.
Meanwhile, Energy Minister John Jinapor confirmed that four power units have been restored, and the remaining ones are expected to be back in operation within the week.
Overall, the government says it is focused on fixing the problem quickly and making the power system stronger to avoid similar issues in the future.
