Bawumia calls for stronger support for Ghana’s garment industry

Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called for increased support for Ghana’s garment and apparel industry to enhance its competitiveness, create jobs and contribute to economic growth.

He made the call after meeting with the Association of Garment and Apparel Manufacturers as part of his ongoing policy engagements with industry stakeholders.

The meeting focused on challenges confronting local manufacturers and possible measures to strengthen the sector’s performance on the international market.

Dr Bawumia noted that Ghana was not providing adequate support to the garment industry compared with countries such as Bangladesh and Benin, stressing the need for a change in approach.

He said the sector had significant potential to generate employment, promote local businesses and expand Ghana’s economic opportunities if the necessary support systems were put in place.

The former Vice-President said the concerns raised by the association and its contributions during the discussions would help inform policy proposals aimed at addressing the industry’s challenges.

He also expressed appreciation to the manufacturers for their participation and the insights they shared during the engagement.

The meeting forms part of Dr Bawumia’s broader policy consultations with business groups and industry players to identify barriers to growth and explore interventions that could improve productivity and strengthen the competitiveness of Ghanaian businesses.
