Sammi Awuku slams gov’t over Miracles Aboagye’s arrest

Akuapem North MP and former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of attempting to suppress opposition voices following the reported arrest of NPP communicator Dennis Miracles Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In a statement shared on social media on Sunday, July 12, Mr Awuku questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrest, noting that it occurred only hours after Mr Aboagye publicly declared his intention to contest for the position of NPP National Communications Director.

“Barely hours after declaring his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the NPP, Dennis Miracles Aboagye finds himself in EOCO custody. Coincidence? Perhaps,” Mr Awuku wrote.

The Akuapem North legislator argued that the incident points to what he described as a growing pattern of harassment and intimidation of opposition figures and government critics.

“It is becoming increasingly alarming to see opposition communicators suppressed, harassed and intimidated whenever they hold the government accountable,” he stated.

Mr Awuku further alleged that the trend extends beyond politicians to ordinary citizens and social media activists who express dissenting opinions.

“From party communicators to TikTokers and social media activists, a troubling pattern appears to be emerging. Is the ruling party truly unsettled with criticisms?” he asked.

While insisting that no one is above the law, the former NPP National Organiser maintained that if Mr Aboagye had committed an offence, the allegations should be made public and due process followed.

“If Miracles has broken the law, let the charges be made known and let the courts decide. If not, he should be released,” he added.

The NPP, through its General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, has demanded Mr Aboagye’s immediate release or his arraignment before a competent court if authorities believe he has committed an offence.
