PURC’s silence on outages “surprising” — Adomako-Mensah

The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has criticised the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for staying quiet despite recent power outages in parts of the country.

His comments come after several areas experienced unstable electricity supply.

The government says the situation was caused by a fire at a Ghana Grid Company facility near the Akosombo Dam, along with ongoing work to upgrade transformers in different areas.

During his interview on May 2, Mr Adomako-Mensah said PURC should have spoken to the public about the situation since it is responsible for protecting consumers.

“I am surprised PURC is very quiet. This was the same PURC, which in 2024 sanctioned board members for failing to provide a timetable for a dysfunction causing disruption to the Ghanaian consumer,” he said.

“There have been fluctuations all over, and I am surprised to date PURC has not released any statement. That is quite surprising,” he added.

He explained that PURC has a duty to keep the public informed, especially when there are problems with electricity supply.
