The lawyer for four suspects accused of kidnapping and torturing a 30-year-old man at Assin Fosu has claimed that the alleged victim suggested that a video be recorded to help recover GH¢45,000.
The lawyer said that his clients’ actions were linked to an attempt to retrieve the money, which they allegedly claimed the victim, Bismark Amo, had taken from the main suspect.
According to the lawyer, Amo was not forced to participate in the video recording. He claimed that the victim himself suggested recording the video and promised to provide a contact number for an alleged accomplice who could facilitate payment of the money.
The lawyer said the suspects accepted the proposal because they believed the video would help them recover the alleged debt.
The comments come after the Assin Fosu District Court remanded the four suspects into police custody for eight days over the alleged kidnapping and torture of Amo.
The court, presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Illiasu, granted the prosecution’s request after six provisional charges were presented against the accused.
The charges include conspiracy to commit crime, kidnapping, threat of harm, non-consensual sharing of an intimate image, causing harm and stealing.
The accused persons are 42-year-old Mavis Badu Acheampong, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School; 53-year-old Charles Doku, a security guard; 31-year-old Oteng Baffour, an electrician; and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, also known as Culture.
All four are residents of Breman UGC.
The prosecution alleges that the suspects held Amo captive for nearly a week and subjected him to severe torture while demanding GH¢45,000 from his family.
Police say the suspects claimed the money was owed to Mavis Badu Acheampong over an alleged fraud.
Meanwhile, investigators are searching for a fifth suspect, reportedly a senior military officer, who is alleged to have played a role in organising the incident and is currently outside the country.
The court has directed Mavis Badu Acheampong to formally report the alleged fraud to the Police.
The four accused persons are expected to return to the Assin Fosu District Court on September 22, 2026.
The allegations against the suspects have not yet been tested in court.
