Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has officially filed his nomination to contest the party’s National Chairman position.
Mr Boadu submitted his nomination at the NPP’s national headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra on Thursday, August 27. The filing comes ahead of the party’s national executive elections, which are scheduled for October 3.
He was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa, the MP for Trobu, the NPP Volta Regional Chairman and several former MPs.
Their presence showed their support for Mr Boadu’s bid to become the party’s next National Chairman.
Mr Boadu is one of several people competing for the position, which has attracted considerable interest within the party ahead of the elections.
His decision to contest the position comes at a time when he is also leading in a recent survey conducted by Global InfoAnalytics.
The survey, released on August 20, placed Mr Boadu ahead of former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko and former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko among NPP voters.
Mr Boadu received 27 per cent support, while Mr Agyarko polled 15 per cent and Mr Afoko recorded 10 per cent.
However, 47 per cent of those surveyed did not choose any of the candidates. This means a large number of voters remain undecided and could play an important role in determining the winner.
Mr Boadu also recorded the highest favourability rating among the three leading candidates. About 61 per cent of respondents said they viewed him favourably, while 12 per cent had an unfavourable view of him.
This gave him a net favourability rating of 49 per cent.
Mr Agyarko had a 50 per cent favourable rating and 17 per cent unfavourable rating. Mr Afoko, on the other hand, recorded 50 per cent favourable and 18 per cent unfavourable ratings.
The regional results also showed Mr Boadu ahead of the other two candidates in several regions. These included Bono East, Greater Accra, North East, Northern, Upper East and Central.
Mr Agyarko, however, remained competitive in some of these regions. He recorded 23 per cent in Bono East, 22 per cent in Greater Accra and 21 per cent in the Central Region.
Although the survey gives Mr Boadu an early lead, the large number of undecided voters means the race is still open.
With the October 3 elections approaching, the candidates are expected to step up their campaigns and work to win the support of more party members.
