Catholic Bishops condemn Karnival Kingdom Festival, demand probe

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has criticised what happened at the Karnival Kingdom Festival and is asking for a full investigation into how the event was organised and approved, including the role of the police and other security agencies.

In a statement released on Monday, May 4, 2026, the Bishops said they were worried about reports of people being publicly naked during the festival, which took place from April 22 to 28.

According to them, this behaviour is not acceptable and goes against Ghana’s laws and moral values.

They pointed to Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, which does not allow public indecency.

The Bishops added that even though Ghana welcomes cultural exchange and international-style festivals, such events must still follow the country’s laws and respect its values.

They described the festival as something that damaged Ghana’s image and disrespected national standards.

They also questioned why police officers were present to provide security at the event, saying this raises concerns about how the situation was handled and supervised.

Because of this, they are calling for an independent investigation and stressed that it should be done without political interference.

They also suggested that Ghana should review how permits for public events are given, create clearer rules about acceptable behaviour, and have a national discussion about how far cultural expression should go.

In conclusion, the Bishops warned that if authorities fail to stop or prevent such incidents, it could reduce public trust in the government and the enforcement of the law.
